2008 Holiday News - Christmas with the Ryan FamilyWhen the Ryan kids were growing up, says Ruth Ryan, Nolan was traveling for most of the year because of his baseball responsibilities. So the period from Christmas to New Year’s Day — a period just after the end of the season and just before training camp — became a special time for family. But now that the Ryan children, Reid, Reese and Wendy, all have families of their own, it’s not always possible to get everyone together. Yet for those who are in town for the holidays, the special qualities of the Ryan traditions from years past carry on. You might be surprised to learn that the Ryan Family traditions are much the same as so many other typical American families. They gather at the Ryan home on Christmas eve for dinner, for opening presents and later for attending church services. The next day, everyone returns to the Ryans’ house in early afternoon for a late brunch, a NFL game or two, and outdoor activities like bike riding in the neighborhood, should weather permit. The day after Christmas the entire family then treks to their South Texas ranch for a week of hunting, college bowl games and great food. “This tradition hasn't changed for years,” Ruth says. “I just like to be home for Christmas eve and Christmas day. Then we always have gone to the ranch because it’s always been a week when the kids were off from school and their Dad was off from baseball. The boys and our daughter have always enjoyed that time with their Dad on the ranch. I’m the only non-hunter in the family, but I’ve always gone with them and enjoyed it just as much. So that’s a tradition we’ve kept up with our grandchildren as well.” To learn more about the Ryan Family’s Holiday traditions, read Nolan's blog.
