September 2010 Newsletter Taste of North Austin
Great food, nice weather and a large crowd made for a huge success at the Taste of North Austin event. Participants sampled food and beverages and watched cooking demonstrations. Benefits from the event went to charities. Marie is a self-taught cook who grew up in Austin with two working parents and three hungry brothers. She is the author of the book, Cooking with Marie, which focuses on quick, easy and "healthy enough" cuisine.
Nolan Attends Black-Eyed Pea Event
Nolan Ryan attended a Black-Eyed Pea event to publicize the restaurant's new menu items. Black-Eyed Pea locations across Dallas have begun making all their beef dishes with Nolan Ryan's Beef products. Those in attendance got to sample some of these new dishes which include:
Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 3-5 minutes Serves: 4 to 6 (depending on size of steak) 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs 1 cup blue cheese crumbles ½ cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Salt and freshly ground pepper, for seasoning 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 to 6 cooked* Nolan Ryan’s Steaks (*cook your steaks a little less than you normally would because the steaks will continue to cook when you brown the topping in the oven) Preheat oven to broil. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place bread crumbs, blue cheese crumbles, parsley, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Toss until combined. Drizzle with olive oil; toss again.
Place grilled steaks on the foil-lined baking sheet. Using your hands, cover the top of each steak with a small mound of the blue cheese and breadcrumb mixture, pressing down gently as you work so the mixture holds together.
When all of the steaks are covered, place the baking sheet in the oven. Broil until the cheese begins to melt and the breadcrumbs are lightly browned, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Remove from oven and serve immediately. Tell us how it turned out!
Batting Practice with Black-Eyed Pea Customers
The Texas Rangers hosted a first-time-ever event at the Ballpark in Arlington for customers of Black-Eyed Pea restaurants. Thirteen Black-Eyed Pea restaurants in Dallas set up a drawing for their customers online and in stores. They declared 20 winners from the promotion who got to watch the Texas Rangers batting practice from behind home plate. After an hour of batting practice, participants were taken through the lower tunnels of the ballpark to the post-game media conference room, where two Rangers baseball players, rookies Mitch Moreland and Neftali Feliz, chatted with the group and signed autographs prior to the game.
